Most comparison posts on this blog put Applyra next to a tool built for someone else. AppTweak sells to agencies. Sensor Tower sells to investors. Astro only speaks iOS.
Sonar is different. It targets exactly who we target, on the same two stores, from the same browser tab. Its homepage says "the ASO tool for indie app developers", which is more or less what ours says. So this comparison is narrower and, frankly, closer.
TL;DR
Sonar is a good tool aimed at the same person you are. The gap is price and access: $19/month with a 7-day trial, against $9.99/month with a plan that stays free forever.

The Quick Verdict
If you want to try an ASO tool this afternoon without entering a card, Applyra is the one you can actually open. If you want revenue estimates beside your rankings and a terminal to drive them from, Sonar earns its price.
Everything else is detail, and the detail is below.

Pricing, in plain numbers
Sonar sells one plan to indies and one to studios.
| Applyra | Sonar | |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Permanent, no card | None |
| Trial | Not needed | 7 days, card required |
| Entry price | $9.99/month | $19/month |
| Annual option | Not required | $149/year on a launch offer |
| Team plan | Not sold separately | $990/year (Agency) |
A note on that $149, because it will age badly: it is a launch promotion that ends on 31 August 2026, discounting a regular price of $279 a year. Sonar's own page shows the strike-through. Quote the $19 monthly figure when you compare, not the promo, or you will be comparing against a price that no longer exists in a few weeks.
The more interesting difference is not the amount. It is that Sonar's meter starts on day one. You give a card, you get seven days, and then you are a customer. Applyra's free plan has no clock on it: one app, five keywords, one competitor, and it stays that way for as long as you want.
For a developer who has just shipped and does not yet know whether ASO will move anything, that difference decides whether the tool gets tried at all.
Where Sonar is genuinely strong
This is not a hit piece, so let me be specific about the two places Sonar does something we do not.
A command-line interface
Sonar ships a CLI alongside its REST API and MCP server. Applyra exposes the same data through a REST API and an MCP server, so a shell script or a CI job can read your rankings either way, but you write the two lines of curl yourself rather than calling a first-party binary. If you want the binary, Sonar has it.
Built-in revenue estimates
Sonar estimates monthly revenue for any app on the store. Applyra does not do that, deliberately: estimates are modelled numbers and we would rather ship rankings we can verify. It is the right call for optimizing your own listing, and the wrong one on the day you want a rough read on what a competitor earns.
The honest summary
Sonar is the better buy if you want revenue estimates or script your work from a terminal. Applyra is the better buy on price, on unlimited keyword tracking, on trying before paying, and on AI metadata suggestions.
Where Applyra pulls ahead
A free plan that does not expire
Applyra's free tier is the shortest argument in this post. One app, five tracked keywords, one competitor, seven days of ranking history, no card, no countdown. It is enough to answer the only question that matters at the start: is my app findable for the terms I care about?
Sonar's three browser tools (an ASO score checker, a keyword generator and a difficulty browser) work without signup, and they are useful. But they are one-off lookups, not tracking. Nothing watches your rankings until you are paying.
Half the monthly price
$9.99 against $19. Over a year that is $120 against $228, and the annual promo only closes the gap while it lasts. For a solo developer whose app makes $300 a month, that difference is not rounding.
AI suggestions on your actual metadata
Applyra reads your listing and proposes titles, subtitles and keyword-field changes against the terms you track, on both stores. Sonar's AI story runs through its MCP server: you connect Claude or Cursor and ask questions of live store data. Both approaches are legitimate. Ours needs no extra tooling, theirs is more flexible if you already work inside an AI client.

When Sonar is the better fit
Two cases, and neither is an edge case.
You want revenue estimates next to your rankings when you size up a competitor. You automate from a terminal and a CLI is worth more to you than a dashboard.
In either case, pay the $19.
When Applyra is the better fit
You have one or two apps and you want to see whether ASO does anything before you pay for it. You care about the monthly number because your app is not yet paying your rent. You want metadata suggestions handed to you rather than questions you have to think to ask.
That is most indie developers, which is why the free plan exists.
Getting started
Add your app, pick the keywords you think you should rank for, and let the tracker run for a week. If the picture is useful, $9.99 keeps it running. If it is not, nothing expires and nobody charges you.

If you are still shortlisting, the best ASO tools for indie developers guide puts both of these next to nine others with prices checked at the source, and the cheapest ASO tools ranks the field on cost alone.
Prices verified on trysonar.app on 14 August 2026. Sonar's launch offer ends 31 August 2026, after which the annual price returns to $279. Re-check before quoting.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Sonar cost compared to Applyra?
Sonar's Indie plan is $19 per month or $149 per year, which is a launch offer running until 31 August 2026 against a regular price of $279 per year. Applyra is $9.99 per month flat, with a permanent free plan at $0. Sonar has no free plan, only a 7-day trial.
Does Sonar have a free plan?
No. Sonar offers a 7-day free trial that requires a card, plus three browser tools that work without signup. Applyra has a permanent free plan with one app, five keywords and one competitor, no card required and no expiry date.
Is Sonar or Applyra better for an indie developer?
Both are built for indie developers and both cover the App Store and Google Play from a browser. Applyra costs about half as much, tracks unlimited keywords and lets you start free. Sonar ships a command-line interface, so it fits developers who want to script their ASO work.
Can I connect Applyra to Claude or Cursor like Sonar's MCP server?
Yes. Applyra publishes an MCP server so AI assistants can query your keyword and ranking data directly, and a REST API with 10,000 requests per month on the paid plan. Sonar also offers an MCP server plus a CLI and a per-day API quota.
When is Sonar the better choice?
Pick Sonar if you want app revenue estimates built in, or if a command-line interface matters to your workflow. Those are real gaps in Applyra and worth paying the difference for.
Can I switch from Sonar to Applyra?
Yes. Applyra's free plan lets you add an app and start tracking in a few minutes without a card. Ranking history does not transfer between tools, so the usual approach is to run both for a couple of weeks before deciding.
