App rank checkerfor the App Store and Google Play
See where any app ranks for a keyword, in 117 countries. We read the top 100 results on both stores, as they stand today, in a few seconds.
How to check your app’s keyword ranking
- 1
Pick the store and the country
App Store or Google Play, then the country whose results you want to read: rankings are by country, and each store front has its own.
- 2
Find your app
Search it by name, or paste its App Store or Google Play link.
- 3
Type the keyword
You get the position in the top 100, the apps ranking around yours, and the keyword’s difficulty and traffic when Applyra has scored it.
The checker reads the same results Applyra tracks every day, for the same depth: the first 100 apps on both stores. On Google Play that is deeper than the other rank checkers we tested, which stop around the first 30. Whatever you check, the language is the one the country’s store opens in.
What your rank means
A keyword ranking is only useful once you know what it buys you. Here is how to read yours.
- #1 to #3
- The results people see before they scroll. On the App Store the first result often fills most of the screen, so the gap between first and third is wider than it looks.
- #4 to #10
- The first screens. You are a real option for anyone who types this search, and every place gained here shows in your downloads.
- #11 to #30
- Within reach. The apps right above you are your actual competition for this keyword, often more than the category leaders are.
- #31 to #100
- The store connects your app to the search, but few people scroll this far. A keyword here is a candidate to climb or to swap for a more specific one.
- Not in the top 100
- The store does not tie your app to this search strongly enough yet, or the phrase is too crowded. Longer, more specific searches are usually the faster way in.
Every part of the result, and what to do when your app is not in the top 100, is in the rank checker guide.
App Store vs Google Play keyword rankings
The App Store matches a search against your name, subtitle and hidden keyword field. Your description doesn’t count, and neither does your promotional text: we tested that on 1,081 top apps. Google Play reads your title, short description and full description, so a phrase repeated naturally in the description can carry you there.
That’s why the same app often ranks for a keyword on one store and not on the other. Check both: a keyword that is out of reach on the App Store can be wide open on Google Play, and the other way round. Every field and its limit is in the character limits reference.
Why your rank looks different on your phone
Search the store from your own phone and you get your results: shaped by your store account and its country, your language, your device and what you have searched and downloaded before. On the App Store an ad often sits above the first result too.
The checker reads the results a new visitor in the chosen country gets, without the sponsored slot. That is the ranking most of your future users see, and the one worth comparing from one day to the next.
Check once, then track
One check is a snapshot. It tells you where you stand today, not whether last week’s update worked. On apps that changed nothing for two weeks, 79% of keyword days on the App Store and 73% on Google Play showed no movement at all, and a few keywords still jumped five places on an ordinary day. How long ASO changes take has the full numbers.
That is what rank tracking is for. Applyra reads your keywords every morning on both stores, keeps the history next to your releases, and sends you a weekly email with what moved. When everything drops at once, the algorithm change detector tells you whether the store moved or your app did, and this guide walks through what to do.
How to move up for a keyword
- Put the exact phrase where the store reads it. On the App Store, the name or the subtitle first, then the keyword field. On Google Play, the title or the short description.
- Pick keywords you can win. A keyword where the top ten all carry the phrase and thousands of ratings is a long road. Check its difficulty and traffic in the keyword tool, and follow the keyword research guide to choose them.
- Watch the apps right above you. They are the ones to pass, and the competitor finder shows which other searches they win.
- Give each change a week. Ranks react within a day, but daily noise hides the trend until you have several readings.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check where my app ranks for a keyword in another country?
Pick the store, then the country, then your app and the keyword in Applyra's free rank checker. It reads that country's own search results, in 117 countries on the App Store and Google Play, so you see the position someone there sees, without a VPN or a local store account.
What is the best app rank tracker for the App Store and Google Play?
For an indie developer or a small studio, Applyra. It tracks the top 100 results on both stores every day, in 117 countries, puts the keyword's difficulty and traffic next to your rank, and has a permanent free plan, with unlimited keywords at $9.99 a month. This rank checker is the free, one-off version of the same data.
Is the app rank checker free?
Yes. Three checks a day need no account at all. A free Applyra account keeps you checking, shows the full top 100 for every keyword, and tracks five keywords of your choice every day, with no card.
Can I track my app's keyword rankings every day?
Yes. The checker gives you one reading. A free Applyra account reads your keyword rankings every morning on both stores, keeps the history next to your releases and sends you a weekly email with what moved. The Unlimited plan tracks as many keywords as you want for $9.99 a month.
How deep does the rank checker look?
The top 100 results on both the App Store and Google Play, the same depth Applyra reads for daily tracking. When your app is not in the first 100, the checker says so, shows who ranks instead, and suggests longer searches worth checking next.
How often do App Store and Google Play rankings change?
Less often than it feels. On apps that changed nothing for two weeks, 79% of keyword days on the App Store and 73% on Google Play showed no movement at all. That is why a single check tells you where you stand today, and a week of daily readings tells you whether something really moved.
Can I check where a competitor ranks?
Yes. Search any app by name or paste its store link: the checker works for every app on both stores, not only yours. To follow a competitor every day, add it to a free Applyra account.
Why is my rank different when I search on my phone?
Your own searches are personalized by your store account, its country, your language and your device. The checker reads the public results a new visitor in that country gets, without the sponsored slot at the top, which is the ranking most of your future users see.
