If your Google Play rankings moved between 19 and 24 October 2026, your listing is probably not the cause. The Google Play algorithm update of October 2026 came in two waves: on Monday 19 October, then again on Friday 23 October. Both times in nearly every country at once.
Google did not announce it. It never does. You only see an update like this by measuring thousands of Google Play searches every day, which is exactly what Applyra's free algorithm change detector does. It flagged both waves the next day. Here is what it measured.

Two waves in five days
Every figure below compares a market with its own ordinary day. 1x is a normal day for that country, 4x is four times the usual movement. Anything from 2x counts as having moved.
| Wave | Markets moved | United States | Hardest hit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon 19 Oct | 17 | 2.2x | |
| Fri 23 Oct | 18 | 2.6x |
The first wave hit Poland hardest: 20% of Polish searches saw their results move 10 places or more in a single day, and 6% of the rankings measured dropped out of the top 100. Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Australia followed, all at 3x or more.
Four days later, the second wave was wider and more even: 18 markets moved at least twice their usual level, and eleven of them got their own update page on Applyra's detector that day.
23 October, market by market
Here is every Google Play market Applyra covers on 23 October, from the hardest hit down:

The share of searches that moved 10 places or more tells the same story in plain terms, next to the same weekday in the four weeks before:
| Market | Searches moved 10+ places | Same weekday, usually |
|---|---|---|
| 28% | 6% | |
| 26% | 6% | |
| 22% | 5% | |
| 22% | 8% | |
| 20% | 6% | |
| 18% | 6% | |
| 15% | 3% | |
| 14% | 4% | |
| 12% | 3% | |
| 12% | 3% | |
| 11% | 2% |
Mexico, at 1.9x, and Brazil, at 1.1x, were barely touched. Brazil also sat out the September waves. When the same update reaches some countries days before others, that is what a staged rollout looks like.
The App Store didn't move
Applyra measures the App Store and Google Play side by side, in the same markets, every day. On 23 October, the App Store stayed within its normal range in every market where the Google Play update was published with an App Store reading. In Germany, 9% of App Store keywords moved 10 places or more, against 8% on that day of the week. In Canada, 23% against 18%. In Poland, 8% against 9%.
That comparison is what turns a spike into a diagnosis. One store rewrote its results twice in five days, the other did not. The change came from Google.

Did I break this, or did the store?
When your rankings fall, that is the first question to answer. The two situations look identical in a dashboard and call for opposite responses.
The fastest way to tell them apart is to compare the same app, over the same days, on a store you did not touch. Both stores down means the cause is on your side. One store down while the other holds means the store changed, and rewriting your listing will not bring the rankings back.
With Applyra, both stores are tracked side by side every day, so this check takes one look at your dashboard. The full method is in why your App Store keyword rankings dropped overnight.
Smaller than September
October is not a repeat of September. Here is the United States and the hardest-hit market on the biggest day of each:
| 23 September 2026 | 23 October 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 9.6x | 2.6x |
| Hardest-hit market | Netherlands, 18.0x | Canada, 4.3x |
| Markets moved | 15 | 18 |
More markets, much less movement in each. That reads as an adjustment of the search system Google rolled out in September rather than a new one: a wide, shallow pass instead of a deep one.
And the new order held. The day after the second wave, the detector read an ordinary level again: on 24 October, 0.8x in the United States, 0.9x in Germany, 1.0x in Poland. A rollback would have shown up as a second spike, since moving every app back is just as much movement as moving them in the first place. It did not come.
See the next update on your own keywords
Applyra tracks your keyword rankings on Google Play and the App Store every day, so the next update shows up as a date on your own chart. Permanent free plan, no card.
What to do if your rankings moved
Match the date before you change anything. If your Google Play rankings moved on 19, 20 or 23 October, check the detector first: here is the 23 October page for Canada, and every other market is one click away. It takes a few seconds, free and without an account.
Wait before your next release
The most expensive response to a store-wide update is a rushed metadata change. A release makes Google Play re-read your listing at the worst possible moment, adds your own change on top of Google's, and erases the before-and-after you need to understand what happened. Give the new positions two or three days. Metadata changes take effect fast, so waiting costs you very little.
Work from where you landed. Since the new order held, your current Google Play positions are your baseline. Look at which keywords changed hands on 23 October, and to whom. The ones you now rank for between 11 and 30 are usually the cheapest to push back up.
Mark the dates in your own history. Any before-and-after comparison that spans 19 to 24 October measures Google's update, not your work. If you changed your short description on the 15th and judged it on the 26th, run that test again on later dates.
Five waves in six weeks
Google Play has now reshuffled search five times since mid-September: on 14, 16 and 23 September, then on 19 and 23 October. The App Store had its own update on 8 October. None of them was announced. Store-wide updates are no longer rare events you read about once a year. They are part of running an app, on both stores, every month.
Applyra's detector caught both waves the next day. With your own keywords tracked daily, you see the next one within a day, instead of spending a week rewriting a listing that was never the problem.
Applyra tracks your rankings on both stores every day, so an update shows up on your own chart, keyword by keyword, with the traffic and difficulty of every keyword next to it. Start on the permanent free plan and move to unlimited tracking for $9.99/month when you need it. The algorithm change detector stays free for everyone, with no account required.

Was there a Google Play algorithm update in October 2026?
Yes, two waves in five days, on 19 and 23 October 2026, and Google announced neither. On 23 October, 18 of the markets Applyra measures moved at least twice their ordinary level, with Canada at 4.3 times, the Philippines at 4.1 and India, Australia, Russia and Saudi Arabia at 3.8. On 19 October, 17 markets moved, led by Poland at 4.0 times.
Which countries were affected by the October 2026 Google Play update?
Nearly all of them on 23 October: Canada, the Philippines, India, Australia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Indonesia, Japan, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Poland, the Netherlands, Turkey, Italy, the United States and Spain all moved at least twice their usual level. Mexico, at 1.9 times, and Brazil, at 1.1, were barely touched, the usual sign of a staged rollout.
How big was the October 2026 Google Play update compared with September?
Much smaller. On 23 September 2026, the United States ran at 9.6 times its ordinary level and the Netherlands at 18. On 23 October, the United States ran at 2.6 times and no market went above 4.3. October looks like a smaller adjustment after September, not a second September.
Did the App Store change at the same time as Google Play in October 2026?
No. On 23 October 2026, the App Store stayed within its normal range in every market where Applyra published the Google Play update with an App Store reading, Germany at 9% of keywords moved against 8% for that day of the week, Canada at 23% against 18%. One store moved and the other did not, so the change came from Google.
What should I do if my Google Play rankings moved between 19 and 24 October 2026?
Check the date first, then wait. If your drop falls on 19, 20 or 23 October, the update is the first explanation to rule out. Do not ship a metadata change in reaction, since a new release makes Google Play re-read your listing and you lose the clean before-and-after. Give the new positions two or three days, check that your App Store rankings held, then work from where you landed.
