Getting started

How to add your first competitor

Applyra suggests competitors from the keywords you both rank on, so the list is the one the store results produce rather than the one you had in mind.

Video transcript

Now let's add a competitor. And the best first pick is rarely the one you have in mind. On your app's page, open Competitors. Applyra already suggests a few, from the store searches where you both show up. Each one says why: how many search terms you compete on, head to head. This is the choice that matters. The category leader outranks you everywhere, so the comparison teaches you nothing. A rival your size, on your keywords, turns into a list of terms to fight for. One click on Track adds a suggestion. Or search any app by name. Check the pair, your app against theirs, then add it. From there you get the visibility gap between you, updated daily, the keywords you both target, and who's ahead on each, and every change they ship to their listing.

Every tracked app in Applyra comes with suggested competitors, built from the store searches your app and theirs both turn up in, and ordered by how much of your search surface they overlap. Add one in a click and it is tracked from there, which gives you a visibility gap, a head to head keyword view and their release history.

Ask a founder who their competitors are and you get the three apps they admire. Ask the search results and you get a different list, usually more useful. Applyra builds the second one.

Start from the suggestions

The suggestions are waiting on each tracked app's page before you ask for them, and adding one takes a single click.

The Add a competitor dialog in Applyra: suggested competitors with their shared search terms, TickTick found by name, and the review step comparing it with Todoist.

That list reliably contains at least one app nobody had on their shortlist. It is the app taking installs on the terms you thought you owned, which is precisely the one worth watching. Finding competitors explains how the list is built.

What a tracked competitor gives you

  • A visibility gap: your score against theirs, on the same market, updated daily, which is what the competitors overview is built around.
  • A head-to-head view: every keyword you both target, with who holds the better position, plus the terms only they rank on. See head to head.
  • Their release history: what changed in their listing and when, described in release alerts.
  • An AI briefing that reads those numbers and writes the short version of what they are doing and where they are beating you: AI insights.

Choose one that teaches you something

The most useful first competitor is not the market leader. A giant outranks you everywhere and the comparison produces one flat conclusion. Pick an app roughly your size that appears on your keywords: the gaps are then small enough to be worth closing, and the head-to-head view turns into a list of specific terms to fight for.

On the free plan

One competitor, which is enough to run the comparison end to end and see what it changes about your priorities. The paid plan removes the count.

Next

You now have an app, keywords and a rival, which is everything the product needs. Continue with reading your first results, and when you want to act on the gap rather than watch it, follow turning a competitor gap into a plan.

Frequently asked questions

How does Applyra decide who my competitors are?

It reads the store searches your app turns up in, looks at which other apps turn up in the same results, and orders them by how much of your search surface they overlap. The result is the list the store results produce, not a category listing.

Does tracking a competitor tell them anything?

No. Applyra only reads public store data. Nothing you do in the product is visible to the apps you track.

Which competitor should I track first?

Not the market leader. Pick an app roughly your size that turns up on your keywords: the gaps are small enough to be worth closing, and the head to head view becomes a list of specific terms to fight for rather than one flat conclusion.

How many competitors can I track on the Applyra free plan?

One, which is enough to run the whole comparison end to end and see what it changes about your priorities. The paid plan removes the count.
