Why my app is not ranking for a keyword I track

Applyra reads the top 100 results for a keyword in one market. No rank means your app was not in those 100, which is a result rather than a failed reading.

Applyra reads the top 100 results for a keyword, in one store, one country and one language. If your app is not among those 100, the position is recorded as not ranked and the tracker shows a dash. That is a measurement, not a missing one: the store was asked, it answered, and your app was not in the answer.

This matters because an empty position is never ambiguous in Applyra. If the ranking data cannot be read, you get an error instead of a blank. A dash means you are outside the first hundred results.

Why 100 and not more

Nobody scrolls to position 140. Past the first hundred results a position has no practical value, so it is not measured, and it does nothing for your visibility score either. An ambitious keyword you have not broken into yet counts for nothing there, and it starts paying the day you climb into range.

Never ranked, or just dropped out

The tracker separates the two. A dash on its own means there was no position this time. A dash with an Out badge means you held a position on the previous measurement and lost it. The second one is worth looking at the same day: open rank history to see whether it was a slide or a cliff.

The usual reasons

  • The market is not the one you are thinking of. A keyword is tracked in a specific store, country and language. Ranking in the United States tells you nothing about Germany. See markets. If you searched the term on your own phone and did see your app, you were reading a different storefront: why Applyra shows a different number from the store.
  • The keyword is out of reach for now. Check its difficulty score. A term dominated by apps with a hundred times your review count is not going to surface a new listing.
  • The word is not in your listing. The stores rank what they can read. If the term appears nowhere in your title, subtitle, short description or, on iOS, your keyword field, there is little for them to match. See metadata fields.
  • The listing is too new. A freshly added app has no history with the store yet, and the first days are the least representative ones. Putting the term in your title works fast when it works at all: most of the gain lands the day the listing goes live, so the absence of any movement after a week is itself an answer.

What to do next

Open the keyword in the Keywords Inspector. It shows who does rank in the top 100 for that term, which tells you what the store thinks the keyword means and how far the gap is. If the apps ranking there look nothing like yours, the keyword is not the problem: the match is. If they look like yours and are simply bigger, the keyword is a target, not a mistake, and the opportunities view will tell you whether the traffic is worth the climb.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my keyword show no rank in Applyra?

A keyword shows no rank when your app was not in the top 100 results for that keyword, in that store, country and language, on the day Applyra measured it. Applyra reads 100 positions per keyword and records anything below that as not ranked.

Does no rank mean the data failed to load?

No. An empty position always means not ranked, never unknown. If ranking data cannot be read at all, Applyra returns an error rather than a blank position, so a dash in the tracker is a real result.

What does the Out badge next to a keyword mean?

It means your app held a position in the top 100 on the previous measurement and does not hold one now. It is the difference between never having ranked and having just dropped out.

How soon after adding a keyword do I get a position?

Immediately. Adding a keyword fetches the top 100 for it on the spot and tells you whether your app is in there, so you know within seconds rather than waiting for the next daily refresh.
